HOLLYWOOD STEPS OUT (1941)

I always loved cartoons with celebrity caricatures. Warner Brothers' "HOLLYWOOD STEPS OUT" is one of the best.

The background art does a beautiful job depicting the glamorous Hollywood nightclub scene at Ciro's, one of Tinseltown's notorious hot spots.

The pan shot of the interior is digitally recreated, giving us a view of the art we never saw in the movie. That's Cary Grant on the far right.

You can find out who all the old movie celebrities are here:

The Beautiful Briny, Shimmery Shiny Sea

This fantastic artwork underplayed two dancing fish for mere seconds in the BEAUTIFUL BRINY SEA segment of BEDKNOBS AND BROOMSTICKS.

FIrst up, the featured fish in a screen cap. Remember them swimming by? Below it, my digitally re-created pan Background.

After several hundred backgrounds and blog entires, I'm running out of words! I hate to repeat myself, but...

Truly, the texture and play of light is marvelous.

After doing this for years, every once in a while I am truly amazed at the artwork revealed. This is one of those times. Who would expect such an intriguing piece of art behind this very brief scene? Disney excellence raises the bar again!

Gorgeous!

Here are some more pieces from Italian guest artist Andrea Scipione, wonderful digital re-creations of backgrounds from CINDERELLA. Thank you Andrea for sharing these!

THE LITTLE MERMAID

A new guest artist from Italy, Andrea Scipione sent these wonderful digital re-creations of backgrounds from THE LITTLE MERMAID. Thank you Andrea!

This was the last Disney feature to use hand-painted cels.

Enjoy these wonderful B/Gs. Bella!

THREE CABALLEROS

Here are two different treatments of the same street from THE THREE CABALLEROS. The first (like a pop-up book) is very cartoonish. The second is more like a chalk drawing.

Theoretically, they could have used one B/G and zoomed in for a close-up. instead, two B/Gs were painted and the textures are quite different.

This is intriguing to me. How about you?

Neji Hyuga character information and Wallpaper

Things I want to share

Neji Hyuga (Hyūga Neji) is a branch member of the famed Hyuga clan. He has a grudge towards everyone in the main branch . He is a natural genius, surpassing those of the main branch. When Neji is first introduced, he has an air of superiority about him, strongly believing that everyone is resigned to their fate. However, after battling with Naruto Uzumaki, Neji finally changes his outlook on the world.

Neji has a large knowledge of his Byakugan, a bloodline limit that allows you to have an unobstructed view of the world around you. It can see through any solid object and can see the chakra points of a person, and using his Gentle Fist, a style that pushes chakra out of ones hand, can effectively control the flow of chakra within an foe. After the Preliminaries of the Chunin Exams, he learned in the period of one month Eight Trigrams Palms Heavenly Spin, a technique where one ejects chakra out of all 64 of their chakra points and spins like a top, creating a barrier of unpentrable chakra around ones body.

Personality

While under the belief that his father died because he was a member of the branch house, Neji concludes that fate is something decided at birth and that no matter what one does, people cannot escape their destiny. Neji often applies this to people he views as weaker than he is, particularly his teammate Lee and his cousin Hinata Hyuga. He dismisses Lee's dream of becoming a great ninja despite his inability to mold chakra as hopeless, and suggests that Lee can never defeat him.

During his match in the Chunin Exams, he tells Hinata that she is unfit to be a ninja due to being too kind and not confident enough. When she is eventually able to turn his philosophy against him, telling him that she believes that he is suffering from trying to become worthy of the main house despite his being born into the branch family. Neji is enraged by this and attempts to attack Hinata, but is stopped before he can land a blow that would have almost certainly killed her. While Hinata is left near death after the battle, Neji's only concern is that he could not complete his attack. He disregards Hinata's personal growth in the match, concluding that because she was defeated, "a failure will always be a failure."

Neji displays similar efforts to condescend others during his match with Naruto Uzumaki who, despite being repeatedly struck down, continues to try and fight him. While Neji tries to show Naruto that fate cannot be fought and that someone who is weak will always remain weak, Naruto is unwilling to accept this mindset, arguing that Neji, for all his belief in fate, has not accepted his own destiny. Naruto taps into the power of the demon fox sealed within him and fights Neji, regaining his access to his chakra. Using a shadow clone to feign defeat, Naruto surprises and defeats Neji. With this defeat and kind words from Naruto, Neji decides he would try to overcome his destiny.

With this example of overcoming "destiny" as well as finding out the truth about his father's death soon afterwards, Neji abandons the concept of inescapable fate. No longer bound by the idea that he is stuck at his current status, Neji resolves to become strong enough to never again lose a battle. To do so he begins putting more emphasis on working well with his team, and starts to value a mission's successful completion and his teammates' safety over his own betterment. In addition, Neji begins trying to remedy the estranged relations between himself and the main house members, most particularly by being kinder to Hinata. His efforts seem to be effective, as he begins training with Hiashi and in Part II even starts to wear traditional Hyuga robes. As another result of his loss against Naruto, Neji no longer thinks of people as failures who can never change, as he suggests that he would not have persevered in Lee's situation, and believes that if Lee works hard enough, he can surpass the gifted. Neji is glad Naruto was able to influence him to change.

Abilities

As a member of the Hyuga clan, Neji possesses the Byakugan, which gives him an almost 360-degree field of vision, save for a small blindspot at the back of the neck. Neji is acutely aware of his blind spot and takes extra caution in keeping it away from opponents as well as paying close attention to it. While the Byakugan naturally has only a 50 meter field of vision, Neji is able to increase the range of its sight several times over by the start of Part II, to around 800 meters. He is noted to have a particularly strong Byakugan in comparison to other members of the clan, perhaps surpassing all of them.

With the rest of Team Guy's taijutsu skills, Neji's Byakugan also allows him to specialize in the Gentle Fist fighting style, which enables him to damage an opponent's chakra circulatory system and inner organs directly with even a slight tap. Neji also uses this technique to attack his opponents heart directly and send them into cardiac arrest resulting in the death of the opponent with but a single strike. His strength and brutality in this area are such that four Jonin—Might Guy, Kakashi Hatake, Kurenai, and Hayate-felt the need to intervene when he was on the verge of killing Hinata during the Chunin exams.

Since his time in the Ninja Academy, Neji has been held to be a natural genius, even becoming the top-ranked rookie in his class. As a member of the Hyuga clan's branch house, Neji is forbidden to learn the clan's secret techniques, but has managed to deduce their workings simply through observation. Since mastering these jutsu, Neji has begun to refine and strengthen them for more specialized needs. He has learned many of these techniques, such as Eight Trigrams Palms Heavenly Spin. In the anime, the fruits of his efforts are first seen during the Sasuke Retrieval arc where he uses Eight Trigrams One Hundred Twenty-Eight Palms (????, Hakke Hyaku Nijūhachi Shō), essentially a doubled version of the Sixty-Four Palms technique, to strike numerous targets at once. In Part II he also develops the Eight Trigrams Empty Palm (????, Hakke Kūshō), a more focused version of the Heavenly Spin, with which he can expel chakra from his palm to attack opponents out of his physical reach. In the Rescue Gaara arc, Neji also displays his ability when he uses Eight Trigrams Mountain Crusher (????, Hakke Hazangeki) which is essentially a version of the Eight Trigrams Empty Palm that is used at point blank range, to defeat his enemy. While most of the former Konoha Genin become Chunin over the timeskip, Neji is the only one to become a Jonin.

The Nine-Tailed Demon Fox (Kyubi)

Health and Wellness

The Nine-Tailed Demon Fox (九尾の妖狐, Kyūbi no Yōkō?, English TV "Nine-Tailed Fox Spirit/Demon") is the most powerful of the tailed beasts. Its power is such that it is regarded as an age-old natural disaster, as a single swipe of one of its nine tails is enough to raise tsunamis and flatten mountains. Twelve years before the start of the series Madara Uchiha used his Mangekyo Sharingan to have the fox attack Konohagakure. None of the ninja of the village were able to defeat it until the Fourth Hokage, Minato Namikaze, arrived to deal with it. Minato sacrificed his life to seal the fox into the body of his newborn son, Naruto Uzumaki. Rather than completely seal off the fox's great power, however, Minato only sealed away a portion of it, giving Naruto access to the rest for unknown reasons. Minato left a key to Jiraiya that could either strengthen or weaken the fox's seal should the need arise. The seal naturally becomes weaker as the years pass, and in the event that it is broken the demon fox will be released.

HOW IT'S DONE: Re-creating Digital B/Gs

I frequently get questions about how I actually recreate these backgrounds. Today I was working on refining a B/G for one of my Mary Poppins Penguin cels, and I thought I'd show the process, step by step. There were actually eleven layers. Here I am sharing the major steps only.

On rare occasions, a background will appear for a frame or two by itself, before a character enters or leaves a scene. They are the exception, however. Usually the animated character(s) move all over the scene.

So then, the concept is (with DVD screen caps) to look for the places where the character is NOT. I layer these in Photoshop like a jigsaw puzzle, blending the seams where the pieces meet, and eventually I have a completed background. As an example, here is a montage of just a few of the background fragments this POPPINS piece required.

I darkened the underlying original frame cap, so the background pieces really stand out. This shows exactly how the process works. You can clearly see in each successive frame a different piece of the background, with which I can cover the penguins, thus re-creating the entire original background.

It's a painstaking process. This one took about five hours. I was lucky here, the colors matched perfectly frame to frame. The really tough ones are long pans where the various sections' colors actually change hue, brightness and/or tint. All this can be adjusted, but it compounds the complexity of the process exponentially.

Since this POPPINS setup has people in it, there was one more step than usual: they had to be digitally erased on each layer so their original key frame position remained.

Remember, you can always click on the images to see a larger version.

This first image shows about half of the left penguin removed:

A few layers later, most of the left penguin is removed:

Again, a few layers later, most of both penguins have been eliminated:

Here's the finished background. Notice there is a slight artifact of the left penguin's flipper on Mary's dress. This is good - it will help with exact placement of the cel overlay. It will disappear underneath the cel, as will all the re-created B/G art. But at least we got to see it, first!

And just for fun, I took an earlier view of Mary turned toward Bert, and overlaid that, so you could see a finished image of Bert and Mary at tea, with the table set, no penguins, no flipper artifacts, and a beautiful unobstructed view of the background art.

LILO AND STITCH Pan Background

Here I've recreated an entire pan B/G, and you'll recognize the far left and right elements from yesterday's post.

Don't forget to click on it to see the larger version.

Ain't technology grand??!!!

LILO AND STITCH

This contemporary Disney film was one of the last successful "traditional" Disney animated features. These first few backgrounds show a definite stylistic link to the classic Disney style. There are definite tropical echoes of "Hawaiian Holiday" (1937) and "The Jungle Book" (1967) in the artwork. The lush, native Hawaiian landscapes are beautifully rendered, immediately invoking the warmth and charm of the Polynesian islands.

Kakashi Hatake

Kakashi Hatake is a fictional character in the Naruto universe created by Masashi Kishimoto and developed into a media franchise, consisting of a series of manga, anime, soundtracks, OVAs, movies, video games, and other collectibles. Kishimoto originally planned to introduce Kakashi in the manga to the series' titular character, Naruto Uzumaki, early on, but pushed back this meeting so that Naruto's teammates could be better developed.[5]

In the anime and manga, Kakashi is the leader and teacher of Team 7, consisting of the series' primary characters, Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, and Sakura Haruno. He is initially portrayed as a detached and apathetic figure, but as the series progresses, his loyalty to his friends and students becomes increasingly apparent. Kakashi's past has been extensively explored in the series, resulting in a gaiden being devoted to his past experiences. Kakashi has appeared in several pieces of Naruto media, including the two of the four featured films in the series, all of the original video animations, and several video games.

Numerous anime and manga publications have praised and criticized Kakashi's character. Although he has been noted to be an echo of similar detached shōnen characters, the duality of Kakashi's apathetic and serious sides have been praised.[6][7] Kakashi's popularity has been noted by reviewers; T.H.E.M. Anime Reviews commented that the series could simply be renamed "Kakashi."[7] Kakashi has been highly popular with the Naruto reader base, placing high in several popularity polls.[8] Merchandise based on Kakashi has also been released, including key chains and plush dolls.[9][10]

Character outline

Background

Kakashi's background goes unexplored for the first part of the series, not being shown in any detail until Kakashi Gaiden, a six chapter series that divides the gap between Part I and II of the manga. During Kakashi's youth his father, a ninja that was highly revered in Konohagakure, abandoned a mission crucial to the village in order to save the lives of his teammates. Disgraced by the villagers and those he had saved because of the repercussions the village suffered, Kakashi's father committed suicide. Wishing to avoid his father's dishonor, Kakashi adopted the philosophy that the success of a mission must always come first, becoming humorless and by-the-book in the process.[17]

In later years Kakashi was assigned to lead a mission that would turn the war going on at the time in Konoha's favor.[18] When his teammate, Rin, was captured by enemy ninja, Kakashi elected to leave her behind and finish the mission. His other teammate, Obito Uchiha, rejected this alternative, stating that those who abandon their friends are worse than garbage and that Kakashi's father had done the right thing by saving his teammates.[19] Touched by Obito's words, Kakashi joined him in a rescue effort, though his left eye became damaged in the ensuing battle.[20] After finding Rin and preparing to escape, an enemy induced cave-in crushed Obito. With the cave continuing to collapse around them and Obito unable to free himself, Obito urged his teammates to save themselves. Before leaving, Obito had Rin implant his Sharingan eye into Kakashi's damaged eye socket as a gift.[21] His new eye in place, Kakashi fled with Rin as the cave collapsed, eventually completing their mission and forever mourning Obito's death.[22]

Personality

Obito's death greatly changed Kakashi, as he adopted many of Obito's traits and philosophies. Most recurring of these is his concept of teamwork: when first forming Team 7, Kakashi tests their abilities with a bell test wherein the three must capture the two bells he keeps on his person. Only by working as a team, regardless of the fact that there aren't enough bells for each of them, are they able to pass, instilling in them the concept of teamwork early on.[23] Kakashi continues to further this philosophy for the duration of Part I upon Sasuke Uchiha, whose drive to get stronger causes him to slowly turn against his friends and teammates. Though Kakashi frequently reminds Sasuke of the importance of teamwork and tries to show him how strength can be found in friendship, he is unable to get through to him before the latter's defection.[24]

Kakashi keeps his personal life separate from his interactions with his students, only going so far as to say that he has a number of hobbies and dreams that are "none of [their] business".[25] He also states that everyone precious to him is dead.[24] What is known of Kakashi's personal life is that he spends much of his free time at a memorial site where Obito's name is engraved. He tends to lose track of time when he is there, and is frequently late to his appointments as a result (another trait adopted from Obito).[26] Similarly, Kakashi constantly keeps the lower half of his face covered, and thus the appearance of his face remains a mystery. Episode 101 of the anime, an omake episode dedicated to Team 7's efforts to unmask Kakashi, implies he is quite handsome, as two employees at a ramen shop (male and female) are left awestruck after he briefly removes his mask to eat.

One pastime that Kakashi allows his students to be aware of is his fondness for the Make Out (イチャイチャ, Icha Icha?) series of novels. The books, detailing the author's (Jiraiya) experiences in love, are runaway best-sellers within the Naruto world.[27] When asked more specifically about the contents of the books, Masashi Kishimoto explained that Naruto's target demographic was not old enough for him to disclose the details of the plot.[28] Kakashi is usually seen reading one of the books during events that do not require his complete attention, such as his early conversations and training sessions with Team 7.[29] Naruto has on occasion used Kakashi's attachment to the books against him; he threatens to spoil the ending of the latest installment in the series, forcing Kakashi to shut his eyes and ears to avoid learning the secret and leaving him off guard in the process.[30]

Abilities

The Sharingan given to him by Obito is a sticking point to Kakashi's fame in the Naruto world. Granting him the ability to mimic the movements and jutsu of others, the Sharingan gives Kakashi an edge in battle by allowing him to turn his opponent's abilities against them.[31] Because it is a transplanted eye Kakashi's Sharingan is always active. Similarly, because the Sharingan is unique to those of Uchiha lineage, Kakashi's Sharingan is very taxing for him to use. Because of its shortcomings, Kakashi keeps the eye covered with his forehead protector when he is not using it. Despite this, Kakashi is very proficient with his Sharingan, being of comparable mastery to experienced Uchiha like Itachi Uchiha.[32] During the gap in time between Part I and II, Kakashi even develops a Mangekyo Sharingan. With it he can create a localized interdimensional space-time warp, allowing him to send any targeted object to another dimension.[33] Because performing this ability requires extended bed rest afterwards, Kakashi avoids using it unless absolutely necessary.[34]

With his ability to mimic the jutsu of others, Kakashi has added over one thousand different attacks to his repertoire, leading to his nickname of "Copy Ninja Kakashi" (コピー忍者のカカシ, Kopī Ninja no Kakashi?).[35] Much of this extended arsenal is composed of ninjutsu, making him a specialist in the field. Kakashi is well-rounded in all other jutsu-types, shown to be adept with taijutsu and at least having a cursory knowledge of genjutsu.[4] Because of his abilities, Kakashi is noted to be an obvious candidate for the position of Hokage, the protector of Konoha, should the position ever become vacant.[36]

Although most of Kakashi's abilities were acquired with his Sharingan, Kakashi has two abilities he developed by himself. Lightning Blade, a collection of lightning chakra in one's hand, was created by Kakashi in his youth. By rushing at the enemy and thrusting the Chidori into a target, Kakashi can kill most opponents with one strike. Because of the speed at which the technique is performed, regular eyes experience a tunnel vision effect when using it and leaving the user open to counterattack.[37] After gaining his Sharingan, Kakashi was able to overcome this flaw, and uses its analytical capabilities to better react to enemy movements.[38] His second unique ability is the pack of ninja dogs he is able to summon to his side. The dogs, presumably raised by Kakashi since they were puppies, are called upon when Kakashi needs to find something or someone and can then hold that target in place while Kakashi catches up to them.[39]

TREES from MELODY TIME

Color me sentimental and old-fashioned... but this segment moves me very deeply. The classic Joyce Kilmer poem TREES received a beautiful musical setting by composer Oscar Rasbach. From that, Disney's version received an orchestration which was incredibly lush, with a storm segment added in the middle. The final touch was beautiful vocals by "Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians." Probably most blog readers are too young to even recognize that name. But as a very small child in the 60s, my parents took me to a Fred Waring concert. Mr. Waring was a great vocal conductor, and "the Pennsylvanians" were his singers, his choir.

Rarely will you hear a choir sing with such intensity, nuance and feeling. Nearly every word receives special phrasing.

These images are from the background art in TREES by Mssr's Disney and Waring.

In a world where much of what passes for "music" is angry, lacking in melody, and colorless, TREES is refreshing in its unbridled nostalgia.

Once upon a time, listeners actually embraced beautiful words and melodies, thrilled to lush harmonies, and music and art strived to move the heart.

It was a simpler time. And that, I think, was a very good thing.
